LED & Planning Department

The LED & Planning Department exists within local municipalities for a powerful and purposeful reason: to transform communities from the ground up . Its existence is rooted in constitutional mandates and practical necessity. It also plays a pivotal role in shaping the region’s development and economic future.

A detailed breakdown of the functions of the Nketoana Local Economic Development & Planning Department is provided below.

Local Economic Development

Local Economic Development The LED, Tourism, and Agricultural Unit within a municipality plays a vital role in fostering inclusive economic growth, sustainable development, and community empowerment. This unit is responsible for identifying and promoting local economic opportunities, supporting small businesses, and facilitating job creation through targeted initiatives. By developing tourism assets—such as cultural heritage sites, natural attractions, and local events—it helps attract visitors and stimulate local spending. Simultaneously, the agricultural component focuses on empowering emerging farmers, enhancing food security, and promoting agro-processing to add value to local produce. Together, these functions work in harmony to build resilient local economies, reduce poverty, and improve the quality of life for residents.

Youth & Sports

Informed by national youth frameworks and policy... the unit coordinates youth-focused activities in partnership with schools, NGOs, and government. It aims to improve education, economic opportunities, and social well-being for young people.

Building Control

Building Control : The Building Control Unit within a municipality plays a critical role in ensuring that all construction activities comply with national regulations, local by-laws, and safety standards. Its primary function is to oversee the approval and inspection of building plans, monitor construction sites, and enforce compliance with the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act. This unit ensures that buildings are structurally sound, safe for occupancy, accessible to people with disabilities, and equipped with adequate fire safety measures. By regulating land use and construction practices, the Building Control Unit helps maintain orderly urban development, protects public health and safety, and promotes sustainable infrastructure growth within the municipality

Housing & Urban Planning

Housing & Urban Planning The Housing and Urban Planning Unit within a municipality plays a crucial role in shaping inclusive, sustainable, and well-organized human settlements. Its primary responsibility is to coordinate the development and implementation of housing programs that address the needs of low-income and vulnerable populations, including the provision of affordable and adequate shelter. This unit also oversees spatial planning to ensure that land use aligns with long-term growth strategies, environmental sustainability, and equitable access to services. By integrating housing delivery with infrastructure planning, land management, and community engagement, the unit helps prevent informal settlements, promotes urban densification, and supports the creation of safe, liveable neighbourhoods. Ultimately, it serves as a key driver in transforming urban spaces into thriving, resilient communities.
